He was born on March 30, 1933, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, which exposed him to music at an early age. Bacalov began his musical training at the age of six, studying piano with his mother. He showed exceptional talent and was soon enrolled at the National Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires, where he studied composition, piano, and conducting. He graduated with honors in 1956 and began his career as a composer and conductor. In 1958, Bacalov moved to Italy, where he continued his studies at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He studied composition with Goffredo Petrassi and conducting with Franco Ferrara. He also worked as a pianist and arranger for various Italian singers and musicians. Bacalov's breakthrough came in 1966 when he composed the score for the film "Django," directed by Sergio Corbucci. The film's theme song, "Django," became an instant hit and won the prestigious Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. Bacalov's success continued with his score for the film "Il Postino" in 1994, which won an Academy Award for Best Original Dramatic Score. Bacalov's music is characterized by its eclectic style, blending classical, jazz, and traditional Argentinean music. He was known for his use of unconventional instruments, such as the bandoneon, a type of accordion commonly used in Argentinean tango music. Bacalov composed music for a wide range of media, including films, television, and theater. Some of his notable works include the scores for the films "The Gospel According to St. Matthew" (1964), "The Price of Power" (1969), "La Luna" (1979), and "Il Postino" (1994). He also composed music for the television series "The Adventures of Pinocchio" (1972) and "Marco Polo" (1982). In addition to his work as a composer, Bacalov was also a respected conductor. He conducted many orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Bacalov received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Golden Globe Award, the Academy Award, and the David di Donatello Award. He was also awarded the title of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2002. Bacalov passed away on November 15, 2017, at the age of 84.
