The Gustav-Mahler-Ensemble Wien is a classical music ensemble that was founded in Vienna, Austria in 1997. The ensemble is named after the famous Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, who was born in Kaliště, Bohemia in 1860 and died in Vienna in 1911. The Gustav-Mahler-Ensemble Wien is dedicated to performing the works of Mahler and other composers of the late Romantic and early modern periods. The founding members of the Gustav-Mahler-Ensemble Wien were a group of young musicians who were passionate about the music of Gustav Mahler. They were inspired by the composer's innovative approach to orchestration and his ability to express complex emotions through music. The ensemble's founding members included conductor and pianist Andreas Stoehr, violinist and concertmaster Rainer Honeck, and cellist Clemens Hagen. Since its founding, the Gustav-Mahler-Ensemble Wien has become one of the most respected classical music ensembles in Europe. The ensemble has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Musikverein in Vienna, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Carnegie Hall in New York City. The ensemble has also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, and Simon Rattle. One of the highlights of the Gustav-Mahler-Ensemble Wien's career was their performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 8, also known as the "Symphony of a Thousand," at the Salzburg Festival in 2000. The performance featured over 1,000 musicians, including eight soloists, eight choirs, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance was widely praised for its grandeur and emotional intensity, and it cemented the Gustav-Mahler-Ensemble Wien's reputation as one of the world's leading classical music ensembles. In addition to their performances of Mahler's music, the Gustav-Mahler-Ensemble Wien has also performed works by other composers of the late Romantic and early modern periods, including Richard Strauss, Anton Bruckner, and Arnold Schoenberg. The ensemble has also commissioned new works from contemporary composers, including Wolfgang Rihm and Thomas Larcher. The Gustav-Mahler-Ensemble Wien has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances and recordings. In 2003, the ensemble won the Echo Klassik award for their recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 5. The ensemble has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, including Best Orchestral Performance and Best Classical Album. The current members of the Gustav-Mahler-Ensemble Wien include conductor and pianist Andreas Stoehr, concertmaster Rainer Honeck, cellist Clemens Hagen, and a rotating group of musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and other leading orchestras in Europe. The ensemble continues to perform and record the music of Gustav Mahler and other composers of the late Romantic and early modern periods, and they remain one of the most respected and innovative classical music ensembles in the world.
