L'esule is an opera composed by Giuseppe Verdi, which premiered on March 12, 1845, at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. The opera is also known as "I Lombardi alla Prima Crociata" and is based on the historical events of the First Crusade. The opera is divided into four acts and features a cast of characters that includes Giselda, a Christian woman in love with the Muslim warrior, Oronte, and her father, Arvino, who is a leader of the Lombard League. The story follows the Lombards as they prepare for the First Crusade and their battles against the Muslims. The first act of the opera opens with a chorus of Lombards preparing for the Crusade. Arvino, Giselda's father, is hesitant to join the Crusade, but is convinced by his brother, Pagano, to do so. Giselda is in love with Oronte, a Muslim warrior, and is torn between her love for him and her loyalty to her Christian faith. The second act takes place in Antioch, where the Lombards are preparing for battle against the Muslims. Oronte is captured by the Lombards and sentenced to death, but Giselda pleads for his life and convinces her father to spare him. Oronte is then baptized and becomes a Christian. In the third act, the Lombards are victorious in battle and celebrate their victory. However, Pagano, who has become jealous of his brother's leadership, betrays the Lombards and joins the Muslims. He then kidnaps Giselda and takes her to the Muslim camp. The final act takes place in Jerusalem, where the Lombards are preparing for their final battle against the Muslims. Giselda is reunited with Oronte, who has returned to the Muslim faith. Pagano is killed in battle, and Giselda and Oronte are able to reconcile their love for each other with their different faiths. L'esule is known for its powerful choruses and dramatic arias, such as Giselda's "Salve Maria" and Oronte's "La mia letizia infondere." The opera also features themes of love, loyalty, and religious conflict, which were common themes in Verdi's operas.
