"Gloria" is an opera in three acts composed by Francesco Cilèa. The opera was composed in 1907 and premiered on November 15, 1907, at the Teatro Lirico in Milan, Italy. The libretto was written by Arturo Colautti, based on a play by Victorien Sardou. The plot of "Gloria" revolves around the character of Gloria, a famous singer who is loved by many but is unhappy in her personal life. She is in love with Mario, a painter, but their relationship is complicated by the fact that Mario is already married. Gloria's former lover, the wealthy Baron Scarpia, also tries to win her back, but she rejects him. In the end, Gloria realizes that her true love is Mario, and they decide to run away together. However, Scarpia discovers their plan and tries to stop them. In the ensuing struggle, Scarpia is killed, and Gloria and Mario are able to escape. The music of "Gloria" is characterized by its lush melodies and dramatic intensity. The opera features a number of memorable arias and duets, including Gloria's "Io son l'umile ancella" and Mario's "O dolce mani." The premiere of "Gloria" was a great success, and the opera quickly became popular throughout Italy and beyond. It was particularly well-received in the United States, where it was performed by the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Despite its initial success, "Gloria" has not remained as popular as some of Cilèa's other works, such as "Adriana Lecouvreur." However, it is still occasionally performed today and is considered an important part of the Italian operatic repertoire.
