Gideon Klein's 'Divertimento' is a chamber music piece composed in 1940 while he was a student at the Prague Conservatory. The piece was premiered in 1941 in Prague, with Klein himself playing the piano part. The 'Divertimento' consists of three movements: Allegro, Andante, and Allegro con fuoco. The first movement is characterized by its lively and playful melody, with the piano and violin taking turns leading the piece. The second movement is more somber and introspective, with a haunting melody played by the clarinet. The final movement returns to the lively and energetic tone of the first movement, with a fast-paced and exciting melody played by all three instruments. Klein's 'Divertimento' is notable for its use of traditional classical forms and techniques, such as sonata form and counterpoint, while also incorporating elements of Jewish folk music. This fusion of styles reflects Klein's own identity as a Jewish composer living in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. Despite its initial success, Klein's career was cut short by his deportation to the Terezin concentration camp in 1941. He continued to compose while in the camp, including a string trio and a piano sonata, but tragically died in 1945 at the age of 26 in Auschwitz. Today, Klein's 'Divertimento' is recognized as a powerful testament to the resilience and creativity of Jewish artists during the Holocaust, and a reminder of the immense loss suffered by the world due to the atrocities of that time.
