Carmen is a ballet composed by Rodion Shchedrin in 1967. It is based on the famous opera of the same name by Georges Bizet. The ballet premiered on April 20, 1967, at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, with Maya Plisetskaya in the title role. The plot of the ballet follows the story of Carmen, a fiery and seductive gypsy woman who works in a cigarette factory in Seville, Spain. She captures the attention of Don Jose, a soldier who is engaged to Micaela, a sweet and innocent girl from his hometown. Don Jose becomes obsessed with Carmen and abandons his duties as a soldier to be with her. Carmen, however, is not interested in a serious relationship and soon falls for the toreador Escamillo. Don Jose becomes jealous and violent, leading to a tragic end for all involved. The ballet is divided into four movements, each representing a different act of the story. The first movement introduces the characters and sets the scene in the cigarette factory. The second movement focuses on the love triangle between Carmen, Don Jose, and Micaela. The third movement features the bullfighting arena and the arrival of Escamillo. The final movement is the tragic conclusion of the story. Shchedrin's score for Carmen is a unique interpretation of Bizet's original opera. He incorporates elements of Spanish folk music and flamenco dance, as well as modernist and avant-garde techniques. The music is highly rhythmic and percussive, with a strong emphasis on the brass and percussion sections. The choreography for Carmen was created by Alberto Alonso, a Cuban dancer and choreographer. His style is characterized by fluid and sensual movements, with a focus on the expressive power of the human body. The ballet features a large ensemble cast, including dancers in traditional Spanish costumes and bullfighters in elaborate costumes and capes. Carmen has become one of the most popular and frequently performed ballets in the world. It has been staged by numerous ballet companies, including the American Ballet Theatre, the Royal Ballet, and the Paris Opera Ballet. The ballet has also been adapted into several films and television productions. Shchedrin's score for Carmen has been recorded by many orchestras and conductors, and is considered a masterpiece of 20th-century ballet music.
