"Simori" is a composition for solo piano by Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe. It was composed in 1996 and premiered on 22 August of the same year by pianist Tamara Anna Cislowska at the Sydney Opera House. The piece is divided into three movements and has a total duration of approximately 12 minutes. The first movement, marked "Moderato," begins with a series of repeated notes in the left hand, while the right hand plays a simple melody. The texture gradually thickens as the left hand introduces new material, and the melody becomes more complex. The movement ends with a return to the opening material. The second movement, marked "Lento," is more introspective in character. It features a slow, mournful melody in the right hand, accompanied by sparse chords in the left hand. The melody is gradually developed and becomes more complex, but the overall mood remains somber. The final movement, marked "Allegro," is the most energetic of the three. It features a lively, syncopated rhythm in the left hand, while the right hand plays a playful melody. The texture becomes increasingly complex as the movement progresses, with the left hand introducing new rhythmic patterns and the right hand playing more elaborate melodies. The movement ends with a return to the opening material, bringing the piece to a lively and satisfying conclusion. Overall, "Simori" is a characteristic example of Sculthorpe's style, which is characterized by a fusion of Western classical music with the traditional music of Australia and the Pacific region. The piece features simple, memorable melodies, complex rhythms, and a rich harmonic language that draws on both Western and non-Western musical traditions. It is a challenging and rewarding work for pianists, and has become a popular addition to the contemporary piano repertoire.
