L'Orgue Mystique is a collection of 51 suites for organ composed by Charles Tournemire between 1927 and 1932. The work was inspired by the liturgical year of the Catholic Church and is divided into three cycles: Cycle de Noël (Christmas Cycle), Cycle de Pâques (Easter Cycle), and Cycle après la Pentecôte (Cycle after Pentecost). The work premiered in 1930 at the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur in Paris, where Tournemire was the organist. The premiere was a great success, and the work quickly gained popularity among organists and audiences alike. Each suite in L'Orgue Mystique consists of several movements, including preludes, offertories, and postludes, which are based on the Gregorian chants associated with the liturgical season. Tournemire's use of the Gregorian chant is highly original, as he often incorporates the chant into the organ music in a highly imaginative and expressive way. The characteristics of L'Orgue Mystique are its grandeur, its complexity, and its emotional depth. Tournemire's use of the organ is highly virtuosic, and he makes full use of the instrument's vast range of colors and textures. The music is often highly dramatic, with sudden shifts in mood and tempo, and Tournemire's use of dissonance and chromaticism gives the music a highly expressive and emotional quality. Overall, L'Orgue Mystique is a monumental work that stands as one of the greatest achievements in the history of organ music. Its combination of technical virtuosity, emotional depth, and spiritual power make it a masterpiece of the organ repertoire.
