Nicolae Bretan's "Our House" is a chamber opera in one act, composed in 1940. The opera premiered on May 10, 1941, at the Romanian Opera in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The libretto, written by Bretan himself, is based on a short story by the Romanian writer Ion Agarbiceanu. The opera consists of six movements, each depicting a different scene in the life of a family living in a small village in Transylvania. The first movement, "The Morning," introduces the family as they wake up and begin their day. The second movement, "The Work," shows the family members going about their daily tasks, such as cooking, cleaning, and tending to the animals. The third movement, "The Meal," depicts the family sitting down to eat together. The fourth movement, "The Quarrel," is the emotional climax of the opera. The family members argue and fight over various issues, including money, religion, and politics. The tension builds until the father, who is also the village priest, storms out of the house in anger. The fifth movement, "The Night," shows the family members going to bed, still angry and upset with each other. The final movement, "The Morning Again," brings the opera full circle as the family wakes up and begins another day, seemingly putting their quarrel behind them. Bretan's music is characterized by its simplicity and folk-like quality. He incorporates traditional Romanian melodies and rhythms into his score, giving the opera a distinctly nationalistic flavor. The vocal lines are lyrical and expressive, with each character given a distinct musical personality. The orchestration is spare, with a small ensemble of strings, woodwinds, and percussion providing a delicate accompaniment to the singers. "Our House" is a poignant and intimate portrait of a family in crisis, told through the universal language of music. Its themes of love, forgiveness, and reconciliation resonate with audiences of all cultures and backgrounds.
