Gianguir is an opera seria in three acts composed by Geminiano Giacomelli. The opera was composed in 1735 and premiered in Venice at the Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo on December 26th of the same year. The libretto was written by Pietro Metastasio, one of the most prominent librettists of the time. The plot of Gianguir revolves around the love story between the Persian king Gianguir and the Indian princess Elmira. Gianguir, who is already married, falls in love with Elmira and decides to marry her, despite the opposition of his advisors. However, Elmira is already engaged to the Indian prince Zelimo, who is determined to win her back. The conflict between Gianguir and Zelimo leads to a series of dramatic events, including a battle and a failed assassination attempt. The music of Gianguir is characterized by its virtuosic vocal writing and its use of elaborate ornamentation. The opera features a number of arias and duets that showcase the vocal abilities of the singers, including the famous aria "Sposa, non mi conosci" sung by Elmira in Act II. The orchestration is also notable for its use of colorful and expressive instrumentation, particularly in the overture and the various instrumental interludes throughout the opera. Gianguir was well-received at its premiere and went on to become one of the most popular operas of the 18th century. It was performed throughout Europe, including in Vienna, London, and Paris, and was frequently revived well into the 19th century. The opera's success can be attributed to its compelling storyline, its memorable music, and its showcase of the virtuosic abilities of the singers.
