Pierre Boulez's "Notations" is a set of twelve pieces for solo piano, composed between 1945 and 2005. The work was premiered in its entirety in 1979 by pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard. The twelve pieces are divided into three groups of four, with each group representing a different period in Boulez's compositional career. The first four pieces were composed in 1945, when Boulez was just 20 years old. These early pieces are characterized by their use of serialism and their exploration of the piano's timbral possibilities. The second group of four pieces was composed in the 1950s and 60s, during Boulez's involvement with the avant-garde movement. These pieces are more complex and abstract, with a greater emphasis on rhythm and texture. The final group of four pieces was composed between 1978 and 2005, and represents Boulez's mature style. These pieces are more introspective and contemplative, with a greater emphasis on harmony and melody. Throughout the work, Boulez employs a wide range of extended techniques, including prepared piano, glissandi, and clusters. The pieces are also characterized by their use of irregular meters and complex rhythms. Overall, "Notations" is a landmark work in the development of modernist music, and a testament to Boulez's innovative approach to composition.
