Eleven Intrusions is a musical composition by Harry Partch, an American composer and instrument maker. The piece was composed in 1949 and premiered in 1950 at the University of Illinois. It consists of eleven movements, each with its own unique characteristics and instrumentation. The first movement, "Castor and Pollux," features a duet between two adapted violas, which Partch called "adapted violas d'amore." The second movement, "The Rose," is a solo piece for adapted guitar, which Partch called a "kithara." The third movement, "The Crane," features a solo adapted clarinet, which Partch called a "chromelodeon." The fourth movement, "The Waterfall," is a duet for adapted marimba and adapted viola. The fifth movement, "The Wind," features a solo adapted clarinet. The sixth movement, "The Street," is a duet for adapted guitar and adapted viola. The seventh movement, "The Intruder," features a solo adapted viola. The eighth movement, "The Suicide," is a duet for adapted guitar and adapted viola. The ninth movement, "The Letter," features a solo adapted viola. The tenth movement, "The Window," is a duet for adapted guitar and adapted viola. The final movement, "The Tomb," features a solo adapted viola. Each movement of Eleven Intrusions is characterized by Partch's unique microtonal tuning system, which he called "just intonation." Partch's instruments were also unique, as he designed and built them himself to achieve the specific microtonal intervals he desired. Overall, Eleven Intrusions is a haunting and evocative work that showcases Partch's innovative approach to music composition and instrument design. It remains a significant contribution to the American experimental music tradition.
