PARTCH is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1971 by composer and instrument maker Harry Partch. The ensemble is known for its unique sound, which is created by the use of custom-made instruments that Partch designed himself. These instruments are based on a microtonal tuning system that Partch developed, which allows for a wider range of musical expression than traditional Western tuning systems. The main members of the ensemble are musicians who have been trained in the use of Partch's instruments and tuning system. These musicians include John Schneider, who is the ensemble's artistic director and plays the guitar and other stringed instruments; Erin Barnes, who plays the marimba and other percussion instruments; and T.J. Troy, who plays the bass and other stringed instruments. One of the highlights of PARTCH's career was their performance at the 1985 Los Angeles Olympic Arts Festival. The ensemble performed a piece called "The Dreamer That Remains," which was a tribute to Harry Partch and his work. The piece was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and helped to raise the profile of the ensemble. Another notable performance by PARTCH was their 1991 tour of Europe, which included stops in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The tour was a success, and helped to introduce Partch's music and instruments to a wider audience. In addition to their performances, PARTCH has also received numerous awards and honors over the years. In 1991, the ensemble was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support their work. They have also been recognized by the American Music Center and the American Composers Forum for their contributions to contemporary classical music. Overall, PARTCH is a unique and innovative ensemble that has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Their use of custom-made instruments and microtonal tuning system has helped to expand the boundaries of what is possible in music, and their performances have inspired audiences around the world.More....
