"Per Slava" is a composition for solo cello, composed by Krzysztof Penderecki in 1986. The piece was dedicated to the memory of the Russian cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich, who had passed away in 2007. The premiere of the piece was given by the cellist Ivan Monighetti in Moscow in 1986. The composition consists of three movements, each with its own distinct character and mood. The first movement, marked "Lento," is a mournful and introspective meditation on the cello's lower register. The second movement, marked "Allegro con brio," is a lively and energetic scherzo, full of rhythmic vitality and virtuosic flourishes. The final movement, marked "Lento," returns to the somber mood of the first movement, but with a sense of resignation and acceptance. Throughout the piece, Penderecki employs a wide range of extended techniques and unconventional playing methods, such as glissandi, harmonics, and pizzicato. These techniques are used not just for their novelty, but to create a unique and expressive sound world that is perfectly suited to the cello's rich and resonant timbre. Overall, "Per Slava" is a deeply personal and emotional work that reflects Penderecki's admiration for Rostropovich and his own love for the cello. It is a testament to the power of music to express the most profound human emotions, and a fitting tribute to one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century.
