L'Olimpiade is an opera seria in three acts composed by Antonio Caldara. The libretto was written by Pietro Metastasio and was first performed in Vienna in 1733. The opera is set in ancient Greece and tells the story of two friends, Licida and Megacle, who both love the same woman, Aristea. The plot revolves around their attempts to win her heart while also competing in the Olympic Games. Act I begins with Licida and Megacle arriving in Elis for the Olympic Games. They both express their love for Aristea, who is also in attendance. Aristea is torn between the two men and is unsure of whom to choose. Meanwhile, the high priest Clistene announces that the winner of the games will be granted any wish they desire. In Act II, Licida and Megacle compete in the games, with Licida emerging as the winner. He uses his wish to ask for Aristea's hand in marriage, but she is still undecided. Megacle then challenges Licida to a duel, but Aristea intervenes and convinces them to reconcile. Act III sees the resolution of the love triangle, with Aristea ultimately choosing Megacle. Licida graciously accepts their love and the opera ends with a celebration of their union. L'Olimpiade is characterized by its beautiful arias and duets, which showcase Caldara's skill as a composer. The opera also features a number of virtuosic vocal displays, particularly in the arias sung by Aristea. The music is typical of the Baroque era, with elaborate ornamentation and a focus on vocal technique. The premiere of L'Olimpiade was a great success and the opera went on to be performed throughout Europe. It remains one of Caldara's most popular works and is still performed today.
