Il mondo della luna (The World of the Moon) is an opera composed by Franz Joseph Haydn in 1777. The libretto was written by Carlo Goldoni, an Italian playwright, and the opera premiered in Eszterháza, Hungary, on August 3, 1777. The plot of the opera revolves around a wealthy nobleman, Buonafede, who is convinced by a charlatan, Ecclitico, that he has been transported to the moon. Ecclitico and his accomplices, Ernesto and Cecco, use this ruse to gain access to Buonafede's house and woo his daughters, Clarice and Flaminia. Meanwhile, Buonafede's servant, Lisetta, is also courted by Cecco. The opera ends with Buonafede realizing that he has been tricked and forgiving everyone. Il mondo della luna is a comic opera, and its music reflects this lighthearted tone. The opera is divided into three acts, each with its own set of musical movements. The overture is a lively and playful piece, setting the tone for the rest of the opera. The arias and ensembles are full of humor and wit, with many of the characters engaging in playful banter and wordplay. One of the most notable characteristics of Il mondo della luna is its use of recitative. Recitative is a style of singing that is closer to speech than to traditional singing. In Il mondo della luna, Haydn uses recitative to move the plot forward and to convey the characters' emotions. The recitative is often accompanied by a harpsichord, which provides a simple and unobtrusive accompaniment to the singers. Il mondo della luna was well-received at its premiere, and it remains a popular opera today. Its playful and lighthearted tone, combined with Haydn's masterful music, make it a joy to watch and listen to.
