Merrie England is an English comic opera composed by Edward German. The opera was first performed in 1902 at the Savoy Theatre in London. The libretto was written by Basil Hood and tells the story of the love affair between Sir Walter Raleigh and Bessie Throckmorton, set against the backdrop of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The opera is divided into three acts, each with its own set of movements. The first act is set in the court of Queen Elizabeth I, where the queen is holding a masquerade ball. Sir Walter Raleigh, a courtier, falls in love with Bessie Throckmorton, a lady-in-waiting to the queen. The two begin a secret love affair, which is discovered by the queen's spies. The second act takes place in the countryside, where the villagers are preparing for the annual May Day celebrations. Sir Walter and Bessie are forced to flee the court and seek refuge in the village. The villagers welcome them with open arms and the two lovers are able to enjoy a brief period of happiness. The third act takes place back at court, where Sir Walter and Bessie are put on trial for their affair. The queen is torn between her duty to uphold the law and her affection for Sir Walter. In the end, she pardons the couple and they are able to live happily ever after. Merrie England is known for its catchy tunes and lively dance numbers. The opera is also notable for its use of traditional English folk songs, which are woven into the score. The opera was a huge success when it premiered in 1902 and has remained popular ever since.
