Silvestre Revueltas' "Homenaje a Federico García Lorca" is a tribute to the Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, who was assassinated during the Spanish Civil War. The piece was composed in 1936, the same year that Lorca was killed, and premiered in Mexico City in 1937. The work is divided into three movements, each of which is named after a poem by Lorca. The first movement, "La guitarra," is based on Lorca's poem of the same name and features a solo guitar. The music is characterized by its rhythmic drive and use of syncopation, as well as its evocation of Spanish folk music. The second movement, "El paseo de Buster Keaton," is named after Lorca's poem "Oda a Buster Keaton" and is a playful and whimsical scherzo. The music is marked by its use of dissonance and unconventional harmonies, as well as its sudden shifts in tempo and mood. The final movement, "Son," is based on Lorca's poem "El poeta pide a su amor que le escriba" and is a slow and mournful elegy. The music is characterized by its use of long, sustained notes and its haunting melodies, as well as its evocation of the Spanish flamenco tradition. Overall, "Homenaje a Federico García Lorca" is a powerful and emotional work that pays tribute to one of Spain's greatest poets. Revueltas' use of Spanish folk music and Lorca's poetry creates a deeply evocative and moving musical experience.
