Ensemble 21 is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1994 in Brussels, Belgium. The ensemble is known for its innovative and contemporary approach to classical music, and has gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and recordings. The founding members of Ensemble 21 were a group of young musicians who were interested in exploring new and experimental forms of classical music. The ensemble performed a program of contemporary classical music that included works by composers such as György Ligeti, Steve Reich, and John Cage. The performance was well-received by both critics and audiences, and helped to establish Ensemble 21 as one of the leading contemporary classical music ensembles in Europe. In addition to their performances, Ensemble 21 has also been recognized for their recordings. The ensemble has released several albums, including "Music for 18 Musicians" by Steve Reich, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002. In 2001, the ensemble was awarded the Fuga Trophy by the Belgian Composers' Union, in recognition of their contributions to contemporary classical music. The ensemble has also been awarded the Prix de la Critique, the Prix de la Musique, and the Prix de la SACD, among others. Despite their success, Ensemble 21 remains committed to their mission of promoting and performing contemporary classical music. The ensemble continues to collaborate with composers and other musicians to create new and innovative works, and to push the boundaries of classical music.
