Giovanni Bononcini's opera 'Griselda' is a three-act opera seria that was composed in 1718. The libretto was written by Apostolo Zeno and was based on a story from Boccaccio's 'Decameron'. The opera premiered on February 18, 1722, at the Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo in Venice. The plot of 'Griselda' revolves around the character of Griselda, a peasant girl who marries Gualtiero, the Marquis of Saluzzo. Gualtiero's courtiers are unhappy with his choice of bride and plot to test Griselda's loyalty by convincing Gualtiero to divorce her and marry someone of higher social status. Griselda is forced to endure a series of trials and tribulations, including the loss of her children, before Gualtiero reveals that the whole ordeal was a test of her loyalty and love. The opera is divided into three acts, each with its own set of arias, recitatives, and ensembles. The first act introduces the characters and sets up the conflict, while the second act focuses on Griselda's trials and tribulations. The third act resolves the conflict and ends with a joyful reunion between Griselda and Gualtiero. One of the characteristics of 'Griselda' is its use of da capo arias, which were a common feature of opera seria. These arias are structured in three parts, with the first and third sections being identical and the middle section providing a contrast. The arias are often used to express the characters' emotions and inner thoughts. Another characteristic of 'Griselda' is its use of recitative, which is a style of singing that is closer to speech than to song. Recitative is used to advance the plot and provide exposition, and it is often accompanied by a harpsichord or other keyboard instrument. Overall, 'Griselda' is a prime example of the opera seria genre, with its focus on noble characters, elaborate arias, and complex plot. It remains a popular work in the operatic repertoire and has been performed and recorded by many notable singers and conductors.
