"Carinhoso" is a Brazilian choro composed by Pixinguinha (Alfredo Vianna) in 1917. It premiered in Rio de Janeiro in the same year and quickly became one of the most popular and beloved Brazilian songs of all time. The piece is composed of two main sections, with a slower, more lyrical melody in the first section and a faster, more rhythmic melody in the second section. The first section is characterized by its use of syncopation and chromaticism, while the second section features a lively, danceable rhythm and a call-and-response structure between the melody and accompaniment. One of the most distinctive features of "Carinhoso" is its use of counterpoint, with multiple melodies weaving in and out of each other to create a rich and complex texture. This is particularly evident in the second section, where the melody is accompanied by a syncopated bass line and a series of interlocking rhythms played by the other instruments. The lyrics of "Carinhoso" were written by João de Barro (pseudonym of José Gomes de Abreu) in 1936, nearly 20 years after the song was first composed. The lyrics describe the feeling of being in love and the desire to be close to the beloved, using metaphors drawn from nature and the seasons. Despite its age, "Carinhoso" remains a beloved and widely-performed song in Brazil and around the world. It has been covered by countless artists in a variety of styles, from traditional choro ensembles to jazz and pop musicians. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the timeless beauty and emotional power of Pixinguinha's music.
