Marco Pereira is a Brazilian classical music composer, guitarist, and arranger. He was born on April 17, 1956, in São Paulo, Brazil. Pereira grew up in a musical family, and his father was a guitarist and composer. He started playing the guitar at the age of six and began studying classical music at the age of 13. Pereira's musical education began at the Conservatório Dramático e Musical de São Paulo, where he studied classical guitar with Isaias Sávio. He later studied with Henrique Pinto and graduated from the conservatory in 1975. Pereira continued his studies at the Universidade de São Paulo, where he earned a degree in music education. In the early 1980s, Pereira began performing and recording with some of Brazil's most prominent musicians, including Tom Jobim, Gal Costa, and Elis Regina. He also started composing his own music, which blended elements of classical, jazz, and Brazilian music. One of Pereira's most significant works is his Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra, which he composed in 1995. The concerto was commissioned by the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 1996. The piece features a solo guitar accompanied by a full orchestra and showcases Pereira's virtuosic guitar playing and compositional skills. Pereira has also composed numerous solo guitar pieces, including his Suite Popular Brasileira, which features arrangements of traditional Brazilian folk songs. The suite has become one of Pereira's most popular works and has been recorded by many other guitarists. In addition to his work as a composer, Pereira is also a respected guitar teacher. He has taught at several universities, including the Universidade de São Paulo and the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. He has also published several instructional books and videos on guitar technique and Brazilian music. Pereira's music has been performed and recorded by many other musicians, including the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, the Assad Brothers, and the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra.
