Der Dämon, dance-pantomime, Op. 28 is a ballet composed by Paul Hindemith in 1922. The plot of the ballet revolves around a demon who is summoned by a group of young people who are seeking pleasure and excitement. The demon grants their wishes, but as they become more and more consumed by their desires, they begin to lose their humanity and become like the demon himself. The ballet is divided into three movements. The first movement, titled "Invocation," sets the scene for the ballet and introduces the characters. The second movement, "Dance of the Demon," is the centerpiece of the ballet and features the demon performing a solo dance. The final movement, "Sacrifice," sees the young people realizing the consequences of their actions and attempting to make amends. One of the characteristics of Der Dämon is its use of pantomime. The ballet features very little spoken dialogue, with the story being told primarily through dance and gesture. This was a departure from traditional ballets, which relied heavily on narrative and dialogue. Der Dämon premiered on June 25, 1922, at the Frankfurt Opera. The ballet was choreographed by Léo Staats, with sets and costumes designed by Oskar Schlemmer. The premiere was a success, with critics praising Hindemith's music and Staats' choreography. Overall, Der Dämon is a dark and intense ballet that explores themes of temptation, desire, and the consequences of giving in to one's baser instincts. Its use of pantomime and departure from traditional ballet conventions make it a unique and innovative work in the ballet canon.
