"Gli orti esperidi" is an opera seria in three acts composed by Nicola Porpora. The opera was first performed in Rome in 1721. The libretto was written by Apostolo Zeno and Pietro Pariati. The plot of "Gli orti esperidi" revolves around the mythological story of Hercules and his quest for the golden apples of the Hesperides. The opera begins with Hercules arriving in the kingdom of Licaonia, where he falls in love with the princess Deianira. However, Deianira is already betrothed to the tyrant Erimante, who is also seeking the golden apples. Hercules and Erimante engage in a battle for the apples, which ultimately leads to Erimante's defeat and Hercules' victory. The opera is characterized by its use of virtuosic vocal writing and elaborate orchestration. Porpora's music is known for its expressive melodies and dramatic intensity, which are evident throughout "Gli orti esperidi." The opera features a number of memorable arias, including Hercules' "Alto Giove" and Deianira's "Se tu la reggi al volo." "Gli orti esperidi" premiered to great acclaim in Rome and quickly became one of Porpora's most popular works. The opera was subsequently performed throughout Italy and Europe, and it helped establish Porpora as one of the leading composers of his time. Today, "Gli orti esperidi" is considered a masterpiece of the Baroque era and is still performed by opera companies around the world.
