Antonin Dvorák's Waltzes (2) for strings, B. 105, were composed in 1887. The two waltzes were premiered in Prague on December 10, 1887, by the Czech Quartet. The first waltz is in G major and the second in A major. The first waltz is marked Allegro vivace and begins with a lively and playful melody in the first violin. The second violin and viola join in with a counter-melody, while the cello provides a steady bass line. The waltz is characterized by its light and airy texture, with each instrument taking turns playing the melody. The second waltz is marked Moderato, and has a more subdued and melancholic character. The melody is played in the first violin, with the other instruments providing a gentle accompaniment. Both waltzes are written in a traditional A-B-A form, with the first section featuring the main melody, the second section providing a contrast, and the third section returning to the main melody. The waltzes are relatively short, with the first waltz lasting just over two minutes and the second waltz lasting just under three minutes. Dvorák's Waltzes for strings are notable for their simplicity and charm. They are reminiscent of the Viennese waltzes of Johann Strauss II, but with a distinctly Czech flavor. The waltzes are a testament to Dvorák's skill as a composer, as he was able to create two pieces that are both musically sophisticated and accessible to a wide audience.
