Piezas infantiles is a collection of eight short piano pieces composed by Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera. The work was composed in 1945 and premiered in Buenos Aires the same year. The eight movements of Piezas infantiles are titled: 1. Cuyana 2. Criolla 3. Norteña 4. Candombe 5. Vidala 6. Huella 7. Gato 8. Romanza Each movement is inspired by a different folk music style from Argentina. The first movement, Cuyana, is named after a region in Argentina and features a lively, dance-like rhythm. The second movement, Criolla, is inspired by the Creole music of Argentina and features a more lyrical melody. The third movement, Norteña, is inspired by the music of the northern regions of Argentina and features a fast, rhythmic melody. The fourth movement, Candombe, is inspired by the Afro-Uruguayan music style of the same name and features a syncopated rhythm. The fifth movement, Vidala, is inspired by the music of the Andes and features a slow, mournful melody. The sixth movement, Huella, is inspired by the music of the Pampas and features a fast, driving rhythm. The seventh movement, Gato, is inspired by the music of the same name and features a playful, syncopated rhythm. The final movement, Romanza, is a slow, lyrical piece that brings the collection to a peaceful close. Piezas infantiles is characterized by its use of folk music elements and its accessibility. The collection is often used as a teaching tool for young pianists due to its relatively simple technical demands and its engaging melodies. Ginastera's use of folk music elements in the collection is also representative of his larger compositional style, which often incorporated Argentine folk music into his works.
