Germaine Tailleferre was a French composer who was born on April 19, 1892, in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, France. She was a member of the famous group of composers known as Les Six, which also included Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc, Arthur Honegger, Georges Auric, and Louis Durey. Tailleferre was the only female member of the group, and her music was often characterized by its clarity, elegance, and simplicity. One of Tailleferre's most famous works is "Fleurs de France," which was composed in 1950. The piece is a suite of five movements, each of which is named after a different flower: "Lilas," "Pivoine," "Iris," "Muguet," and "Rose." The suite is scored for a small orchestra, consisting of two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, timpani, percussion, harp, and strings. The first movement, "Lilas," is a gentle and lyrical piece that features a solo violin and a solo flute. The second movement, "Pivoine," is more lively and playful, with a prominent role for the clarinet. The third movement, "Iris," is a slow and contemplative piece that features a solo horn. The fourth movement, "Muguet," is a light and delicate piece that features the harp and the celesta. The final movement, "Rose," is a triumphant and celebratory piece that features the full orchestra. Overall, "Fleurs de France" is a charming and elegant work that showcases Tailleferre's skill as a composer. The piece is characterized by its clear and simple melodies, its delicate orchestration, and its evocative use of nature imagery. It premiered on May 17, 1950, at the Salle Gaveau in Paris, and has since become a beloved work in the classical repertoire.
