Art Nouveau Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2005 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The ensemble is based in New York City and has gained a reputation for its innovative programming and virtuosic performances. The founding members of Art Nouveau Ensemble were violinist David Chan, violist Hsin-Yun Huang, cellist Nicholas Canellakis, and pianist Michael Brown. All four musicians were accomplished soloists and chamber musicians who had performed extensively in the United States and abroad. They came together with the goal of exploring the rich repertoire of chamber music and bringing new works to audiences. The ensemble's name, Art Nouveau, reflects its commitment to exploring new and innovative approaches to classical music. The Art Nouveau movement, which emerged in the late 19th century, was characterized by its emphasis on organic forms and decorative motifs. Similarly, Art Nouveau Ensemble seeks to create music that is both beautiful and expressive, while also pushing the boundaries of traditional classical music. Since its founding, Art Nouveau Ensemble has performed at major concert halls and festivals throughout the United States and Europe. The ensemble has collaborated with some of the world's leading musicians, including violinist Joshua Bell, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and pianist Emanuel Ax. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was its debut at the Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival in 2006. The ensemble performed Mozart's Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, K. 478, and received critical acclaim for its sensitive and nuanced interpretation of the work. The New York Times praised the ensemble's "impeccable ensemble playing" and "deeply felt musicality." In 2008, Art Nouveau Ensemble released its debut album, featuring works by Brahms, Dvorak, and Schumann. The album received widespread critical acclaim and was named one of the top classical recordings of the year by The New York Times. In addition to its performances and recordings, Art Nouveau Ensemble is committed to education and outreach. The ensemble has conducted masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and has worked with schools and community organizations to bring classical music to underserved communities. Art Nouveau Ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2010, the ensemble was awarded the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, in recognition of its innovative and diverse programming. The ensemble has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, including Best Chamber Music Performance and Best Classical Instrumental Solo. Today, Art Nouveau Ensemble continues to be one of the most respected and innovative classical music ensembles in the world. The ensemble's commitment to exploring new and innovative approaches to classical music has earned it a devoted following and critical acclaim. With its virtuosic performances, innovative programming, and commitment to education and outreach, Art Nouveau Ensemble is sure to remain a major force in the world of classical music for years to come.
