Kalevipoeg, suite from the ballet, is a composition by Estonian composer Eugen Kapp. The ballet was composed in 1953 and premiered on January 23, 1954, at the Estonian National Opera. The suite from the ballet was later arranged by the composer himself in 1961. The suite consists of six movements, each depicting a different scene from the ballet. The first movement, "Introduction," sets the tone for the entire suite with its majestic and grandiose theme. The second movement, "Kalevipoeg's Youth," is a lively and energetic dance that portrays the youthful spirit of the main character. The third movement, "Kalevipoeg and Linda," is a romantic and lyrical duet between the two main characters. The fourth movement, "Kalevipoeg's Battle with the Devil," is a dramatic and intense piece that depicts the epic battle between Kalevipoeg and the Devil. The fifth movement, "Kalevipoeg's Return Home," is a triumphant and celebratory piece that portrays the hero's return home after his victory over the Devil. The final movement, "Finale," brings the suite to a grand and majestic conclusion, with a reprise of the main theme from the "Introduction." The suite from Kalevipoeg is characterized by its use of traditional Estonian folk melodies and rhythms, which are seamlessly integrated into the classical orchestral sound. The music is highly evocative and vividly portrays the various scenes and characters from the ballet. The suite has become one of the most popular and beloved works in Estonian classical music, and is often performed in concert halls and on radio broadcasts.
