Role:ConductorNatalia Luis-Bassa is a renowned classical music conductor and composer. She was born in Caracas, Venezuela, on December 23, 1963. Her parents were both musicians, and they encouraged her to pursue a career in music from a young age. Luis-Bassa began studying the piano at the age of four and later learned to play the violin and the viola. Luis-Bassa attended the Simon Bolivar Conservatory of Music in Caracas, where she studied conducting with Jose Antonio Abreu. She also studied composition with Alfredo del Monaco and conducting with Franco Ferrara at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy. In 1988, Luis-Bassa moved to London to continue her studies at the Royal Academy of Music. She studied conducting with Colin Metters and George Hurst and composition with Paul Patterson. She also attended masterclasses with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. Luis-Bassa's career as a conductor began in 1991 when she was appointed assistant conductor of the Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra. She also worked as an assistant conductor with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1994, Luis-Bassa was appointed music director of the Haffner Orchestra in Lancaster, England. She held this position for six years and led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings. She also worked as a guest conductor with many other orchestras, including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. In 2000, Luis-Bassa was appointed music director of the Brent Symphony Orchestra in London. She held this position for five years and led the orchestra in many successful performances. She also worked as a guest conductor with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. In 2005, Luis-Bassa was appointed music director of the Hertfordshire Philharmonia in England. She held this position for six years and led the orchestra in many successful performances. She also worked as a guest conductor with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and the Ulster Orchestra. Luis-Bassa has also worked as a conductor with many international orchestras, including the Orquesta Sinfonica de Venezuela, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Chile, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Tenerife, and the Orquesta Sinfonica de Castilla y Leon in Spain. In addition to her work as a conductor, Luis-Bassa is also a composer. She has written music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. Her compositions have been performed by many orchestras and ensembles around the world. Luis-Bassa has received many awards and honors for her work as a conductor and composer. In 1997, she was awarded the Arts Foundation Fellowship for Conducting. In 2002, she was awarded the Women of the Year Award in the Arts category. In 2006, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Venezuela for her contributions to music. Luis-Bassa is also a dedicated music educator. She has taught conducting at the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She has also taught conducting and composition at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Aragon in Spain.
