She was the daughter of a prominent Hungarian composer, Lajos Szabó, who was also a professor of music at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. Ida Szabó grew up in a musical family and started playing the piano at a very young age. Her father recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Ida Szabó studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where she received her diploma in piano performance in 1952. She continued her studies with renowned pianists such as Zoltán Kodály and Béla Bartók. She also studied chamber music with the legendary Hungarian violinist, Joseph Szigeti. Ida Szabó made her debut as a soloist with the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra in 1952, playing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. Her performance was highly acclaimed, and she quickly established herself as one of the leading pianists of her generation. She went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Ida Szabó was known for her virtuosic technique and her ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music she played. She was particularly admired for her interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms. She was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered many works by Hungarian composers. She was also awarded the Kossuth Prize, Hungary's highest cultural award, in 1963. In 1972, she was made an Honorary Citizen of Budapest, and in 1989, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic. One of the highlights of Ida Szabó's career was her performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1960. She played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. The performance was a huge success, and Szabó received a standing ovation from the audience. Ida Szabó was also a dedicated teacher and taught at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest for many years. She was known for her rigorous approach to teaching and for her ability to inspire her students to reach their full potential. Many of her students went on to have successful careers as pianists and teachers. Ida Szabó continued to perform and teach well into her later years. She gave her last concert in 2003, at the age of 74. She passed away on December 31, 2011, at the age of 82.
