Opera Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its stunning performances for over two decades. Founded in 1998 by conductor and music director Eve Queler, the ensemble has become known for its exceptional interpretations of operatic works, as well as its commitment to showcasing emerging talent in the classical music world. Eve Queler, a renowned conductor and champion of lesser-known operatic works, founded Opera Orchestra with the goal of bringing new life to underperformed operas. Queler had previously served as the music director of the Opera Orchestra of New York, but left to start her own ensemble. She assembled a group of talented musicians and began rehearsing for their first performance, which took place in 1998 at Carnegie Hall. The ensemble's main members include a rotating cast of talented musicians, many of whom have performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras and opera companies. Some of the ensemble's most notable members include violinist Itzhak Perlman, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and soprano Renée Fleming, all of whom have performed with Opera Orchestra on multiple occasions. Over the years, Opera Orchestra has performed a wide range of operatic works, from well-known classics like Verdi's "La Traviata" to lesser-known gems like Massenet's "Thaïs." The ensemble has also premiered several new works, including "The Golden Ticket" by Peter Ash and "The Secret Agent" by Michael Dellaira. One of the ensemble's most notable performances took place in 2004, when they performed a concert version of Richard Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" at Carnegie Hall. The performance was widely praised for its emotional intensity and stunning musicality, and cemented Opera Orchestra's reputation as one of the premier classical music ensembles in the world. In addition to its performances, Opera Orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2007, the ensemble was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts' Opera Honors Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of opera. The ensemble has also been praised for its commitment to showcasing emerging talent, and has provided opportunities for young musicians to perform alongside seasoned professionals. Despite its many accomplishments, Opera Orchestra has faced its share of challenges over the years. In 2013, the ensemble was forced to cancel several performances due to financial difficulties. However, the ensemble has since rebounded, and continues to delight audiences with its stunning performances. Today, Opera Orchestra remains one of the most respected and beloved classical music ensembles in the world. With its commitment to showcasing underperformed operatic works and emerging talent, the ensemble continues to push the boundaries of classical music and inspire audiences around the globe.
