Paul's musical journey began when he joined the Royal Academy of Music in London at the age of 18. He studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and teacher, John Lill. During his time at the academy, Paul honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of classical music. He graduated with honors and went on to pursue a career in music. Paul's first major performance was at the Royal Festival Hall in London in 1972. He played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the Emperor Concerto, with the London Symphony Orchestra. The performance was a huge success, and Paul received critical acclaim for his interpretation of the piece. This performance marked the beginning of Paul's illustrious career as a classical music artist. Over the years, Paul performed at some of the most prestigious venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. He collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. One of Paul's most memorable performances was at the Proms in 1985. He played Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Colin Davis. The performance was broadcast live on television and radio and was watched by millions of people around the world.
