Walter Stiftner was a renowned classical music artist who was born on January 12, 1945, in Vienna, Austria. He was the youngest of three children born to his parents, who were both musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Stiftner was exposed to music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Stiftner's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began studying at the Vienna Conservatory at the age of six, where he received training in piano, violin, and composition. He showed exceptional talent in piano, and by the age of 12, he had already won several local competitions. In 1960, Stiftner won the prestigious International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland, which launched his career as a concert pianist. He went on to perform in major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Stiftner was known for his technical proficiency and his ability to interpret complex musical pieces. He was particularly renowned for his performances of the works of Chopin, Beethoven, and Mozart. He was also a prolific composer, and his works were performed by orchestras and chamber ensembles around the world. Throughout his career, Stiftner received numerous awards and honors. In 1972, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, and in 1985, he was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria. He was also a recipient of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. One of Stiftner's most memorable performances was his 1978 concert at the Salzburg Festival, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73, also known as the "Emperor" concerto. The performance was widely praised for its technical brilliance and emotional depth, and it cemented Stiftner's reputation as one of the greatest pianists of his generation. Stiftner continued to perform and compose music throughout his life, even after he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in the 1990s. He used his platform to raise awareness about the disease and to advocate for research into its causes and treatments. Stiftner passed away on June 22, 2005, at the age of 60. His legacy as a musician and composer continues to inspire generations of classical music enthusiasts around the world.
