Harvey Shapiro was an American cellist and music educator who was born on February 16, 1924, in New York City. He was the son of Russian immigrants who had settled in the United States. Shapiro grew up in a musical family, and his father was a violinist who played in the New York Philharmonic. Shapiro began playing the cello at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with several renowned cellists, including Felix Salmond and Emanuel Feuermann. In 1942, Shapiro graduated from the High School of Music and Art in New York City and went on to study at the Juilliard School. During World War II, Shapiro served in the United States Army and played in the Army Band. After the war, he returned to Juilliard and completed his studies. In 1948, Shapiro won the Naumburg International Cello Competition, which launched his career as a soloist. Shapiro went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also performed as a soloist with many chamber music ensembles, including the Juilliard String Quartet and the Beaux Arts Trio. In addition to his career as a performer, Shapiro was also a dedicated music educator. He taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Curtis Institute of Music. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as cellists, including Yo-Yo Ma and Lynn Harrell. Shapiro was known for his beautiful tone and expressive playing style. He was particularly admired for his interpretations of the works of Bach and Beethoven. He recorded many of these works, including the complete Bach cello suites and the Beethoven cello sonatas. Throughout his career, Shapiro received many awards and honors. In addition to the Naumburg Competition, he won the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation Award, the Avery Fisher Prize, and the National Medal of Arts. He was also inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame. Shapiro continued to perform and teach until his death on January 28, 2014, at the age of 89. He left behind a legacy as one of the greatest cellists of his generation and a beloved teacher who inspired generations of young musicians.
