Buell Neidlinger was an American double bassist, cellist, and composer who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. He was born on March 2, 1936, in Westport, Connecticut, and grew up in a musical family. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist. Neidlinger began playing the cello at the age of six and later switched to the double bass. Neidlinger studied at the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School of Music. He also studied with renowned bassists such as Frederick Zimmermann and Oscar Zimmerman. Neidlinger's early career was focused on classical music, and he played with several orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In the 1950s, Neidlinger began to explore jazz music and played with jazz legends such as Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, and Bill Evans. He also played with rock musicians such as Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, and the Grateful Dead. Neidlinger's ability to play both classical and jazz music made him a sought-after musician in the music industry. One of Neidlinger's most significant contributions to classical music was his work with the New York Philharmonic. He played with the orchestra from 1957 to 1966 and was the principal bassist from 1960 to 1966. During his time with the New York Philharmonic, Neidlinger played under the direction of Leonard Bernstein and performed in several notable concerts, including the orchestra's 1962 tour of the Soviet Union. Neidlinger's work with jazz musicians was equally impressive. He played on Ornette Coleman's groundbreaking album "The Shape of Jazz to Come" in 1959, which is considered one of the most influential jazz albums of all time. Neidlinger also played on Cecil Taylor's album "Unit Structures" in 1966, which is another landmark jazz album. In addition to his work as a performer, Neidlinger was also a composer. He wrote music for both classical and jazz ensembles and was known for his innovative approach to composition. Neidlinger's compositions often blended elements of classical and jazz music, creating a unique sound that was all his own. Neidlinger received several awards and honors throughout his career. In 1960, he was awarded the Prix de Rome, which is a prestigious award given to young artists in recognition of their talent. Neidlinger was also inducted into the International Society of Bassists' Hall of Fame in 2003. Neidlinger continued to perform and compose music until his death on March 16, 2018, at the age of 82. His contributions to both classical and jazz music have had a lasting impact on the music industry, and his innovative approach to music continues to inspire musicians today.
