Born on October 17, 1956, in Genoa, Italy, Armiliato grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Armiliato showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. As a teenager, Armiliato discovered his love for singing and began taking voice lessons. He studied at the Conservatory of Music in Genoa and later at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In 1986, he made his professional debut in the role of Rodolfo in Puccini's La Bohème at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Armiliato's career took off in the 1990s when he began performing in major opera houses around the world. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1996, singing the role of Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca.
