He was the son of a composer and music teacher, Carlo Casella, who was also a professor at the Turin Conservatory. Alfredo Casella showed an early interest in music and began studying piano and composition with his father at a young age. In 1896, at the age of 13, Casella entered the Turin Conservatory, where he studied piano with Giovanni Bolzoni and composition with Giovanni Tebaldini. He was a talented student and won several awards for his compositions while at the conservatory. In 1903, he graduated with a diploma in piano and composition. After graduating from the conservatory, Casella began his career as a pianist and composer. He performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Italy and Europe, and his compositions were performed by leading orchestras and ensembles. In 1915, he was appointed conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, becoming the first Italian conductor to lead a major American orchestra. Casella's compositions were influenced by a variety of styles, including Italian opera, French impressionism, and German romanticism. He was particularly interested in the music of Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev, and he incorporated elements of their styles into his own compositions. One of Casella's most famous works is his Symphony No. 2, which he composed in 1908. The symphony is a large-scale work that features a wide range of musical styles and influences. It is divided into four movements, each of which has a distinct character and mood. The first movement is a lively and energetic scherzo, while the second movement is a lyrical and expressive adagio. The third movement is a playful and whimsical minuet, and the final movement is a grand and majestic finale. Another notable work by Casella is his Concerto for Piano, Strings, Timpani, and Percussion, which he composed in 1920. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the piano, and it features a complex and intricate interplay between the soloist and the orchestra. The work is notable for its use of unconventional harmonies and rhythms, which give it a modern and avant-garde feel. Casella was also a prolific composer of chamber music, and he wrote numerous works for small ensembles. One of his most famous chamber works is his Trio for Piano, Violin, and Cello, which he composed in 1920. The trio is a lyrical and expressive work that showcases Casella's skill as a composer of intimate and personal music. In addition to his work as a composer, Casella was also a respected conductor. He conducted many of his own works, as well as the works of other composers. He was particularly interested in promoting the music of contemporary composers, and he conducted premieres of works by Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and other leading composers of the time. Casella was also a teacher and mentor to many young musicians. He taught composition and piano at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, and he was a frequent guest lecturer at music schools and conservatories throughout Europe and the United States. Alfredo Casella died on March 5, 1947, in Rome, Italy. He left behind a legacy of innovative and influential music, as well as a reputation as one of the leading composers and conductors of his time.More....
