Bernhardur Wilkinson was born on May 15, 1985, in Reykjavik, Iceland. He was born into a family of musicians, and his parents were both professional classical musicians. His father was a cellist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Bernhardur showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Bernhardur began his musical education at the age of five, when he started taking piano lessons with his mother. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument, and by the age of eight, he was already performing in public. He continued to study piano throughout his childhood and teenage years, and by the time he was 18, he had won several national and international piano competitions. After completing his secondary education, Bernhardur decided to pursue a career in music. He enrolled at the Reykjavik Academy of Music, where he studied piano performance under the guidance of renowned pianist and pedagogue, Professor Jónas Ingimundarson. During his time at the academy, Bernhardur also had the opportunity to study with other distinguished pianists, including Vladimir Ashkenazy and Martha Argerich. In 2007, Bernhardur graduated from the Reykjavik Academy of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. He then went on to pursue further studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied with Professor Christopher Elton. In 2009, he graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with a Master of Music degree in piano performance. Throughout his career, Bernhardur has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician. He has given recitals in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. One of the highlights of Bernhardur's career was his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2012. The performance was widely acclaimed by critics, who praised Bernhardur's virtuosity and musicality. The following year, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise for the future. In addition to his performing career, Bernhardur is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught masterclasses at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School in New York, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Conservatoire de Paris. He is also a faculty member at the Reykjavik Academy of Music, where he teaches piano performance. Bernhardur is known for his passionate and expressive playing, as well as his deep understanding of the music he performs. In addition to his performing and teaching activities, Bernhardur is also a dedicated philanthropist. He has established a foundation that provides financial support to young musicians who are pursuing careers in classical music. The foundation has helped many talented young musicians to achieve their dreams and has contributed to the development of the classical music community.
