Finnur Torfi Stefánsson was born on May 22, 1954, in Reykjavik, Iceland. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a composer and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Finnur showed a great interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later learned to play the guitar and the trumpet. Finnur studied music at the Reykjavik College of Music and later at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. He also studied composition with some of the most renowned composers of the time, including Per Nørgård, Ib Nørholm, and Poul Ruders. Finnur's early works were heavily influenced by the avant-garde movement of the 1960s and 1970s. His compositions were characterized by their experimental nature, with a focus on unconventional sounds and techniques. However, as he matured as a composer, Finnur's style evolved, and he began to incorporate more traditional elements into his music. One of Finnur's most significant works is his opera, "The Last Viking," which premiered in 1996. The opera tells the story of the last Viking, who is forced to confront his own mortality and the changing world around him. The opera was well-received by audiences and critics alike and is considered one of the most important works of Icelandic opera. Another notable work by Finnur is his "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra," which was premiered in 2001. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the solo violin, with the orchestra providing a rich and colorful backdrop. The piece has been performed by some of the world's leading violinists, including Gidon Kremer and Hilary Hahn. Finnur's music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, and the London Sinfonietta. He has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Icelandic Music Prize and the Nordic Council Music Prize. In addition to his work as a composer, Finnur has also been an influential teacher and mentor to many young musicians. He has taught at the Reykjavik College of Music and the Royal Danish Academy of Music, and his students have gone on to have successful careers in music. Finnur Torfi Stefánsson passed away on December 27, 2017, at the age of 63. His legacy as a composer and teacher continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.
