He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a composer and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Resnis showed a natural talent for music and began studying the piano at the age of six. Resnis continued his musical education at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, where he studied piano and composition. He graduated with honors in 1975 and went on to pursue a career as a concert pianist. Throughout his career, Resnis has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. He has appeared as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. One of Resnis's most notable performances was his debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1982. He performed Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3, which is considered one of the most challenging pieces in the piano repertoire. Resnis's performance was met with critical acclaim, and he was praised for his technical skill and emotional depth. Resnis has also been recognized for his work as a chamber musician. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading string quartets, including the Emerson Quartet and the Tokyo Quartet. In 1998, he formed the Resnis Piano Trio with violinist Gidon Kremer and cellist Mischa Maisky. The trio has performed together extensively and has recorded several albums. In addition to his work as a performer, Resnis is also a respected composer. He has written works for solo piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. His compositions have been performed by many of the world's leading musicians, including violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Resnis has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1986, he was awarded the Latvian State Prize for his contributions to the arts. He has also been awarded the Order of the Three Stars, which is the highest civilian honor in Latvia. In 2002, Resnis was appointed as the artistic director of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra. Under his leadership, the orchestra has gained international recognition and has performed at many of the world's leading concert halls.
