After completing his studies, Tovijs began his career as a concert pianist. He performed extensively throughout the Soviet Union, including in Moscow, Leningrad, and Kiev. In 1950, Tovijs won first prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. He went on to win several other prestigious awards, including the Grand Prix at the International Piano Competition in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1952. Tovijs was known for his virtuosic piano playing and his ability to interpret a wide range of musical styles.
