Armida Quartett is a classical music ensemble that was founded in Berlin, Germany in 2006. The quartet consists of four members: Martin Funda (violin), Johanna Staemmler (violin), Teresa Schwamm (viola), and Peter-Philipp Staemmler (cello). The ensemble has gained international recognition for their unique sound and interpretation of classical music. The quartet's founding members, Martin Funda and Johanna Staemmler, met while studying at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. They were later joined by Teresa Schwamm and Peter-Philipp Staemmler, who are siblings of Johanna Staemmler. The quartet's name, Armida, was inspired by the character of the same name in the opera "Rinaldo" by George Frideric Handel. Armida Quartett has won numerous awards and competitions throughout their career. In 2012, they won the International Chamber Music Competition in Osaka, Japan, and the International Chamber Music Competition in Weimar, Germany. They were also awarded the prestigious German Music Competition in 2012, which led to their inclusion in the "New Generation Artists" program of the BBC. The quartet has performed at major concert halls and festivals around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Wigmore Hall in London, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. They have collaborated with renowned musicians such as pianist Menahem Pressler and clarinetist Sabine Meyer. One of the highlights of Armida Quartett's career was their performance at the 2016 BBC Proms, where they played a program of works by Haydn, Ligeti, and Beethoven. The performance was highly praised by critics, with The Guardian describing it as "a performance of great depth and insight." In addition to their performances, Armida Quartett is also committed to education and outreach. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops for young musicians in Germany, Japan, and the United States. They also founded the Armida Quartett Academy, which provides intensive training for young string quartets. Armida Quartett's repertoire includes works by classical composers such as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, as well as contemporary composers such as György Ligeti and Jörg Widmann. They are known for their innovative programming, which often combines classical and contemporary works in unexpected ways. Overall, Armida Quartett is a highly acclaimed classical music ensemble that has made a significant impact on the international music scene. Their unique sound and interpretation of classical music have earned them numerous awards and accolades, and their commitment to education and outreach ensures that their legacy will continue for years to come.More....
