The Boston Ballet Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that has been providing live music for the Boston Ballet since 1963. The orchestra was founded by E. Virginia Williams, who was the first music director of the Boston Ballet. Williams was a pianist and conductor who had previously worked with the New York City Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre. The Boston Ballet Orchestra is made up of approximately 65 musicians who are selected through a rigorous audition process. The musicians are all highly trained professionals who have studied at some of the most prestigious music schools in the world. Many of the musicians in the orchestra also perform with other major orchestras in the United States and abroad. The Boston Ballet Orchestra has performed with some of the most renowned ballet companies in the world, including the Royal Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet, and the Paris Opera Ballet. The orchestra has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated choreographers of our time, including George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and William Forsythe. One of the highlights of the Boston Ballet Orchestra's history was its performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in 1976. The orchestra performed with the Boston Ballet in a program that included works by Balanchine, Robbins, and John Cranko. The performance was a huge success and helped to establish the Boston Ballet Orchestra as one of the premier ballet orchestras in the world. Another major highlight of the Boston Ballet Orchestra's history was its performance at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1999. The orchestra performed with the Boston Ballet in a program that included works by Forsythe, Jorma Elo, and Christopher Wheeldon. The performance was highly acclaimed and helped to further establish the Boston Ballet Orchestra's reputation as one of the finest ballet orchestras in the world. Over the years, the Boston Ballet Orchestra has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances. In 2005, the orchestra was awarded the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. The award recognized the orchestra's commitment to performing new and innovative works alongside more traditional repertoire. In addition to its work with the Boston Ballet, the orchestra has also performed with other major arts organizations in the Boston area, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Handel and Haydn Society. The orchestra has also recorded several albums, including a recording of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" with the Boston Ballet.
