A Corte Musical is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1994 in Portugal. The group is known for its performances of early music, particularly from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The ensemble has gained a reputation for its innovative interpretations of historical music, and its members are highly regarded for their technical skill and musicality. The founding members of A Corte Musical were Pedro Castro (recorder), João Paulo Janeiro (harpsichord), and Rui Araújo (viola da gamba). The group was formed with the goal of exploring the rich repertoire of early music, and bringing it to audiences in Portugal and beyond. The ensemble quickly gained a following, and began performing regularly at festivals and concert series throughout Europe. Over the years, A Corte Musical has expanded its membership to include a number of other talented musicians. The current members of the ensemble are Pedro Castro (recorder), João Paulo Janeiro (harpsichord), Rui Araújo (viola da gamba), Ana Mafalda Castro (soprano), and Nuno Mendes (baritone). Each member brings a unique perspective and skill set to the group, and together they create a cohesive and dynamic sound. One of the highlights of A Corte Musical's career was their performance at the Festival de Música Antiga de Óbidos in 1996. The ensemble's innovative approach to early music was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and they were invited back to the festival in subsequent years. A Corte Musical has also performed at other prestigious festivals and concert series, including the Festival de Música Antiga de Barcelona, the Festival de Música Antiga de Granada, and the Festival de Música Antiga de Utrecht. In addition to their live performances, A Corte Musical has also released several recordings. Their debut album, "Música no Tempo de Camões," was released in 1996 and featured music from the Renaissance period. The album was well-received by critics, and helped to establish the ensemble as a leading interpreter of early music. A Corte Musical has since released several other albums, including "Música no Tempo de D. João V" (2000), "Música no Tempo de D. João IV" (2004), and "Música no Tempo de D. Manuel I" (2010). A Corte Musical has received numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 1998, the ensemble was awarded the Prémio Carlos Paredes, which recognizes outstanding contributions to Portuguese music. They have also been nominated for several other awards, including the Prémio José Afonso and the Prémio Amália Rodrigues. Despite their success, A Corte Musical remains committed to their original goal of exploring and interpreting early music. The ensemble continues to perform regularly, both in Portugal and abroad, and their innovative approach to historical music continues to captivate audiences around the world.
