He went on to study at the Juilliard School, where he earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance. McMillen's career as a professional musician began to take off in the early 2000s, when he won several prestigious awards and competitions. He has also collaborated with a wide range of contemporary composers, including John Adams, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass, and has premiered numerous works written specifically for him. One of McMillen's most notable performances was his solo recital at Carnegie Hall in 2005, which was widely praised for its technical virtuosity and emotional depth. He has also performed at other major venues around the world, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Royal Festival Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In addition to his work as a performer, McMillen is also an active educator and advocate for new music. He has taught at several universities and conservatories, including Bard College, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Juilliard School, and has served as a mentor to many young musicians.
