She was the daughter of a prominent Icelandic composer, Sigvaldi Kaldalóns, who was also a conductor and a music teacher. Tilla Briem grew up in a musical family and was exposed to music from a very young age. She showed a keen interest in music and started taking piano lessons at the age of six. Tilla Briem's talent for music was evident from an early age, and she quickly became a prodigy. She made her public debut as a pianist at the age of nine, and her performance was well-received by the audience. Her father recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. He became her first music teacher and taught her the basics of music theory and piano playing. In 1925, Tilla Briem moved to Berlin, Germany, to study music at the Hochschule für Musik. She studied under some of the most renowned music teachers of the time, including Artur Schnabel, Carl Flesch, and Paul Hindemith. She also took singing lessons and developed a passion for opera. During her time in Berlin, Tilla Briem performed in several concerts and recitals, and her performances were highly praised by critics. In 1930, Tilla Briem made her debut as an opera singer at the Berlin State Opera. She played the role of Pamina in Mozart's "The Magic Flute," and her performance was a huge success. She quickly became a sought-after opera singer and performed in several major opera houses in Europe, including the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. Tilla Briem's voice was known for its clarity, purity, and emotional depth. She had a wide vocal range and was equally comfortable singing soprano and mezzo-soprano roles. Her repertoire included works by Mozart, Wagner, Verdi, and Puccini, among others. She was particularly renowned for her performances of Mozart's operas, and she was considered one of the best Mozart singers of her time. Tilla Briem's career was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. She returned to Iceland in 1940 and continued to perform in concerts and recitals. She also became a music teacher and taught at the Reykjavik College of Music. In 1944, Iceland gained independence from Denmark, and Tilla Briem became a cultural ambassador for Iceland. She traveled to several countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia, and performed in concerts to promote Icelandic culture. In 1950, Tilla Briem returned to Europe and resumed her career as an opera singer. She performed in several major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Vienna State Opera. She also made several recordings of her performances, which were highly acclaimed by critics. Tilla Briem received several awards and honors throughout her career. In 1952, she was awarded the Order of the Falcon, one of Iceland's highest honors. In 1961, she was awarded the title of Kammersängerin by the Austrian government, in recognition of her contributions to the arts. She was also awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1971. Tilla Briem retired from performing in 1976, at the age of 65.
