Born in 1960 in Houston, Hester began playing the piano at the age of five and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He went on to study at the University of Houston, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree in 1982 and his Master of Music degree in 1984. After completing his studies, Hester began his career as a concert pianist, performing extensively throughout the United States and Europe. He quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso performer, known for his technical skill and expressive interpretations of classical music. In 1986, he won the prestigious Young Concert Artists International Auditions, which helped to launch his career and establish him as one of the leading pianists of his generation. Over the years, Hester has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Houston Symphony, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Christoph Eschenbach, Leonard Slatkin, and Michael Tilson Thomas. In addition to his work as a performer, Hester is also a highly respected teacher and mentor. He has been a member of the faculty at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University since 1986, where he has taught countless students and helped to shape the next generation of classical musicians.
