Artist Info
The Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Northern Norway. The orchestra was founded in 2009 as a result of a merger between two orchestras, the Tromsø Symphony Orchestra and the North Norwegian Opera and Symphony Orchestra. The merger was aimed at creating a stronger and more sustainable orchestra that could serve the entire region of Northern Norway. The Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra is made up of around 70 musicians, including both full-time and part-time members. The orchestra is led by its chief conductor, Christian Lindberg, who has been with the orchestra since 2015. Lindberg is a renowned Swedish trombonist and conductor who has worked with many of the world's leading orchestras. The Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra has a diverse repertoire that includes both classical and contemporary music. The orchestra has performed works by composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Stravinsky, as well as contemporary composers like John Adams and Arvo Pärt. The orchestra has also collaborated with a range of artists from different genres, including jazz musicians, pop singers, and folk musicians. One of the highlights of the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra's performances was its participation in the 2018 Arctic Arts Festival. The festival is a biennial event that celebrates the arts and culture of the Arctic region. The orchestra performed a program of music that included works by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, as well as a new work by Norwegian composer Ørjan Matre. The performance was well-received by both audiences and critics, and helped to raise the profile of the orchestra both nationally and internationally. The Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades for its performances. In 2017, the orchestra was awarded the prestigious Spellemannprisen, which is the Norwegian equivalent of the Grammy Awards. The award was given in recognition of the orchestra's album "Northern Timbre," which features works by Norwegian composers such as Geirr Tveitt and Johan Halvorsen. The album was praised for its innovative programming and the high quality of the orchestra's performances. In addition to its performances, the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra is also committed to music education and outreach. The orchestra runs a range of educational programs for young people, including workshops, masterclasses, and concerts. The orchestra also collaborates with local schools and community groups to bring classical music to a wider audience. Overall, the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that is committed to bringing classical music to audiences in Northern Norway and beyond. With its diverse repertoire, high-quality performances, and commitment to music education, the orchestra is a vital part of the cultural landscape of the region.More....
