He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Barley showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Barley's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his father and quickly developed a passion for classical music. By the age of ten, Barley had already performed in several concerts and had won several local competitions. In 1997, Barley was accepted into the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London. In 2007, Barley released his debut album, which featured works by Chopin, Liszt, and Beethoven.
